Evodia rutaecarpa is a tree that is native to China and Korea which bears the berries evodia fructae (Fruits of Evodia). Evodia fruit, which has a strong bitter taste, is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The fruit and root bark are also used as medicine in other herbal practice.

Benefits

Rutaecarpine’s main function is reducing the unwanted effects of caffeine.

It is also used for digestion problems including diarrhea, dysentery, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and lack of appetite.  It is also used for obesity, headache, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure (CHF), infections caused by viruses, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and fluid retention.

Women use evodia to prevent pregnancy, start their periods, and treat bleeding after giving birth.

Evodia root bark is used for infections caused by parasites such as tapeworm and pinworm.

Warnings

Rutaecarpine will not lessen withdrawal symptoms, but only allows for faster caffeine detox.

Taking the herb does not allow people to consume as much caffeine as they want without dangerous consequences.

  • Some people may have allergic reactions to Evodia.
  • Evodia may inhibit blood from clotting.
  • Evodia isn’t suitable for pregnant or nursing mothers.

Special Precautions & Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It might be UNSAFE to use evodia if you are pregnant. It contains some chemicals that affects pregnant animals. These chemicals cause the animals’ uterus to contract and also seem to reduce the size of the litter. It’s not known if evodia affects pregnant women, but it’s best to stay on the safe side and avoid use.

It’s also best to avoid using evodia if you are breast-feeding. Not enough is known about its effects.

Surgery: Evodia seems to slow blood clotting. There is a concern that it might increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery. Stop using evodia at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

INTERACTIONS

Caffeine interacts with EVODIA

The body breaks down caffeine to get rid of it. Evodia might increase how quickly the body gets rid of caffeine. Taking evodia along with caffeine might decrease the effects of caffeine.

Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) substrates) interacts with EVODIA

Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. Evodia might increase how quickly the liver breaks down some medications. Taking evodia along with these medications might decrease how well the medications work.
Some of these medications that are changed by the liver include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrates) interacts with EVODIA

Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. Evodia might decrease how quickly the liver breaks down some medications. Taking evodia along with these medications might increase the effects and side effects of these medications.
Some medications changed by the liver include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and many others.

Medications that change the liver (Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) inhibitors) interacts with EVODIA

Some medications decrease how well the liver breaks down other medications. These medications that change the liver might decrease how fast chemicals in evodia are broken down in the body. This might increase the effects and side effects of evodia.

Medications that slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs) interacts with EVODIA

Evodia might slow blood clotting. Taking evodia along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.
Some medications that slow blood clotting include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Theophylline interacts with EVODIA

The body breaks down theophylline to get rid of it. Evodia might increase how quickly the body gets rid of theophylline. Taking evodia along with theophylline might decrease the effectiveness of theophylline.

L-theanine is an amino acid that is found in tea leaves. It was identified in tea by Japanese scientists in 1949. While tea is the most common dietary source for L-theanine, this compound is also found in some types of mushrooms.

L-theanine will help to drive the production of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, as well as glycine and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). This compound is not made within the body, although it can be produced synthetically.  After being metabolized in the body, it will help to drive the production of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, as well as glycine and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).

In order to go to sleep you have to ride the waves.  During sleep, it’s all about theta waves and delta waves. Theta waves occur in the first stages of sleep and generate two distinct rhythms of greater amplitude and lower frequency than our waking beta waves. Delta waves are the lowest frequency, highest amplitude waves generated during the deepest stages of sleep. But right before sleep, when you’re still in that daydreamy, relaxed state, it’s all about the alpha waves. The brain generates alpha waves during deeply relaxing activities, such as meditation.  But if you struggle to feel peaceful during meditation or get your mind to achieve that quiet calm right before bed, L-theanine can take you there. Studies have shown that L-theanine can generate alpha brain waves in the parietal and occipital regions of the brain, leading to a prolonged calming effect.  In a placebo-controlled study of young individuals with ADHD, L-theanine proved especially effective in helping them get to sleep and experience deep sleep.

Benefits

  • Sleep better at night, feel relaxed and alert during the day
  • Anxiety and Stress relief
  • Better Immunity
  • Tumor and cancer treatment
  • Blood pressure control
  • Sinusitis relief
  • Antioxidative properties
  • Focus and Attention
  • Weight Loss

Cognitive Function

By stimulating the production of key neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, this analog is able to reduce the oxidative stress in the brain and clear up neural pathways, resulting in less amyloid plaque deposition and ensuring that cognitive function is maintained as you age.  It is also known to improve alertness and memory retention.

Stroke Severity

Having an influx of this amino acid analog allows the body to rapidly reduce blood pressure and keep cardiovascular events under control, thus protecting against coronary heart disease and additional strokes.

Anxiety and Stress

Research has shown that those who are regularly supplementing their diet with l-theanine are able to lower their overall stress hormone levels, which reduces the risk of chronic disease and inflammation throughout the body. When consuming this compound in tea, the other antioxidants can further help to relax your mind.

Sleep Quality

Although this compound is linked to boosting alertness and concentration, it also has sedative properties, thanks to its effects on serotonin and dopamine levels in the body. By balancing the hormones in your brain, l-theanine can make it easier for you to drift off peacefully to sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.

Attention Deficit Disorder

The studies in this regard have been somewhat limited, but when administered to young adults with hyperactivity disorders, this amino acid analog was able to reduce distracted thinking and increase their ability to concentrate, resulting in better behavior and academic outcomes.

Schizophrenia

Nervous system and psychological disorders can be particularly hard to treat, but by boosting your brain’s neurotransmitter production, it can minimize those manic episodes and help you keep the symptoms under control. Some studies have found that this amino acid analog can actually protect brain cells from damage and reduce the toxicity levels in neural pathways.

Side Effects

  • Complications of pregnancy
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea

These side effects are most often found in those who take too much of this supplement, which isn’t inherently dangerous, although it can exacerbate gastrointestinal issues. L-theanine is also known to complement caffeine’s effects on the body, so consuming too much of this analog, in addition to caffeine, can have a negative impact on the nervous system. The impact that this can have on hormone production and release means that pregnant and nursing women should avoid its consumption.

Interactions

Medications for high blood pressure (Antihypertensive drugs) interacts with THEANINE

Theanine seems to decrease blood pressure. Taking theanine along with medications for high blood pressure might cause your blood pressure to go too low.

Some medications for high blood pressure include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Stimulant drugs interacts with THEANINE

Stimulant drugs speed up the nervous system. By speeding up the nervous system stimulant medications can make you feel jittery and speed up your heartbeat. Theanine might work to slow down the nervous system. Taking theanine along with stimulant medications might decrease the effectiveness of stimulant medications.

Some stimulant drugs include diethylpropion (Tenuate), epinephrine, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), and many others.

Warnings

But even though some research shows promising results for L-theanine’s anti-tumor properties, teas that contain amino acids can have other ingredients that could be harmful for people with cancer.

KSM 66 for Ashwagandha

Why Lumen chose KSM 66

The Most Clinically Studied Ashwagandha on the Market

The Highest Concentration, Highly Bioavailable, Full Spectrum Root Extract

What is KSM-66?

KSM-66 Ashwagandha is a branded, full-spectrum extract, with the highest concentration of all major root only extracts available on the market today. It is produced using a unique proprietary extraction process, based on “Green Chemistry” principles, without using alcohol or any other chemical solvent.

KSM-66 Ashwagandha has been clinically proven to:

Help reduce stress, anxiety, cortisol levels and stress-related food cravings*

Help promote enhanced memory and cognitive function*

Help promote endurance, strength, muscle size and muscle recovery rate*

Help enhance sexual performance health in both men and women, and testosterone in men*

KSM-66 Strictly Avoids the Use of Leaves

KSM-66 uses only the roots of the ashwagandha plant with absolutely no addition of leaves. Our financial advisors point out that our profits would be far higher if we replaced roots with leaves, given that the price of leaves is often less than 1/15th the price of roots. Despite that, our founders have stood by their basic principle to use roots only. Customers are often curious to know why. To understand our rationale, it helps to know a little about our company. We are a family-owned business founded with the sole mission of supplying the absolute best quality ashwagandha. To be faithful to our mission, we feel it necessary to stay close to mainstream practice and modern scientific evidence. Both in independent clinical trials and in thousands of years of traditional use, the root is the part of the plant that is used predominantly for adaptogenic benefits and internal ingestion. The primary use of leaves traditionally was for topical treatments on the skin for conditions like burns or carbuncles, not internal consumption. The use of the roots is on significantly better scientific foundation in terms of human clinical evidence and period of observation than the use of leaves.

Ashwagandha root consumption has been much heavier with much greater opportunity to observe its safety than ashwagandha leaf consumption.

The predominant majority of published clinical trials today are on the root and not the leaf.

The coverage of ashwagandha in reference works like the pharmacopoeias is only on the root. These reference works are the United States Pharmacopoeia, the British Pharmacopoeia, the Indian Pharmacopoeia, the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia, Indian Materia Medica, the Health Canada monograph and the W.H.O. monograph. The leaf is in fact not even mentioned in any of them for therapeutic use and ingestion.

Regulatory bodies in some European countries allow only the root of ashwagandha plant and not the leaves.

Given that the leaves are plentiful and easily accessible, what reason would Ayurveda practitioners have to go through all the trouble to dig up the root if not their strong belief that the root is better? The pursuit of the ashwagandha root is notable indeed in Ayurveda. Even the very name of the herb (“ashwa” for horse and “gandha” for smell) is owing to the root which smells like a horse, according to Ayurveda texts.

KSM-66 is Ixoreal’s ashwagandha extract, created via a process that took 14 years of R&D to develop and refine. KSM-66 is the best ashwagandha extract on the world market today in the sense that it is the highest concentration full-spectrum extract available today. A “full-spectrum” extract is an extract which maintains the balance of the various constituents as in the original herb, without over-representing any one constituent. The ashwagandha herb’s efficacy is believed to be derived from a complex blend of active constituents. All the constituents need to be present in their natural proportions, which is why it is important for an extract to be full-spectrum. However, producing a high concentration full-spectrum extract is technologically very challenging. Only Ixoreal has managed to create a process that surmounts these challenges, and that too only after many years of R&D. The Ixoreal science team sought to introduce to the world the true quintessence of ashwagandha with all its benefits. Convinced that the essence of the ashwagandha root could be extracted without losing its potency, the science team dedicated itself to learning the nuances of plant chemistry and did what no one was able to achieve until then. With `Green Chemistry` processing, they were able to holistically extract all the root essence while preserving its natural healing potency. This proved to be immensely successful.

KSM-66’s extraction process entails pre-treating the ashwagandha roots with milk. For this reason, it contains milk constituents. Such pre-treatment is consistent with the process described by traditional ayurveda healers and texts. However, the traditional process does not scale up very well. Ixoreal has taken this traditional method and refined it greatly so that it produces high quality ashwagandha in a scalable manner, combining the traditional with the modern. Therein lies Ixoreal’s “secret sauce”, a highly proprietary process that took 14 years to develop and implement. The milk pre-treatment is important in our extraction process because this is in fact what leads to retention of both hydrophilic components and lipophilic components of the raw root, which in turn leads to a full-spectrum extract of such

CLINICAL STUDIES OF KSM 66

KSM-66 Ashwagandha For Stress And Anxiety

A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of Ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults. Chandrasekhar, K., Kapoor, J., & Anishetty, S. (2012). Indian journal of psychological medicine, 34(3), 255.

Results: The treatment group that was given the high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract exhibited a significant reduction (P<0.0001) in scores on all the stress-assessment scales on Day 60, relative to the placebo group. The serum cortisol levels were substantially reduced (P=0.0006) in the Ashwagandha group, relative to the placebo group. The adverse effects were mild in nature and were comparable in both the groups. No serious adverse events were reported.

Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual’s resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.

KSM-66 Ashwagandha For Testosterone Male Sexual Function

Clinical Evaluation of the Spermatogenic Activity of the Root Extract of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) in Oligospermic Males: A Pilot Study Ambiye, V. R., Langade, D., Dongre, S., Aptikar, P., Kulkarni, M., & Dongre, A. (2013).  Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2013.

Results: There was a 167% increase in sperm count (9.59 ± 4.37 × 106/mL to 25.61 ± 8.6 × 106/mL; ), 53% increase in semen volume (1.74 ± 0.58 mL to 2.76 ± 0.60 mL; ), and 57% increase in sperm motility (18.62 ± 6.11% to 29.19 ± 6.31%; ) on day 90 from baseline. The improvement in these parameters was minimal in the placebo-treated group. Furthermore, a significantly greater improvement and regulation were observed in serum testosterone levels with the Ashwagandha treatment as compared to the placebo (p<0.001).

Conclusion: The present study adds to the evidence on the therapeutic value of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), as attributed in Ayurveda for the treatment of oligospermia leading to infertility.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone, produced in the brain, that carries out a wide range of roles in the body; the most well known of its functions is the control of circadian (daily) rhythms and a number of conditions, including radiation exposure, Alzheimer’s disease, and tinnitus.

When we are ready to fall asleep the melatonin released in our body helps to ease us into a relaxing state. The level of this hormone in your body can be affected by a number of things, including the waking and sleep cycle you set for yourself, along with the amount of light that you get each day. The body’s internal clock is a sensitive thing, so even slight fluctuations in your average melatonin levels can have measurable effects.

Benefits

Insomnia

If you suffer from insomnia or any other type of sleep disorder, the regular use of melatonin can get your hormonal levels back on track and ensure a restful night of sleep.

Heart Disease

Melatonin has a number of antioxidant effects on the body, which can also help to reduce strain on the cardiovascular system. This can protect the integrity of blood vessels and arteries, while also helping to keep blood pressure under control.

Immune System

A number of studies have found that this hormone is also connected to the immune system. Without a proper amount of melatonin in the body, the thymus may not be able to properly function, which is essential for immune system strength. The antioxidant effects further relieve stress on the body’s defenses.

Jet Lag

Feeling normal after jumping time zones can be a real struggle for people, often causing days or weeks of unscheduled sleep and unexpected fatigue. Fortunately, the use of melatonin can help to rapidly get the body back on track, realigning the Circadian rhythms without the days of poorly timed fatigue.

Cancer

Breast and prostate cancer, specifically, have been shown to react negatively to melatonin in the body. This chemical is actually able to force these cancerous cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), without damaging the healthy cells surrounding them.

Menopause

The effect of this hormone on the body can ease the transition into menopause for women as they age. This is a time when hormone fluctuations go into overdrive, and ensuring normal sleep patterns can make this difficult time of life a bit easier to handle.

Bladder Dysfunction

This hormone is known to soothe contractions and spasms in the urethra, which can prevent bladder disorders and “accidents”, particularly as you age.

Stress

Melatonin is well known to reduce stress hormone levels in the body, which can relieve symptoms of chronic inflammation and other nervous system disorders.

Autism

Many people with autism suffer from insomnia, and melatonin has emerged as an effective treatment for this problem, thanks to its ability to stabilize hormone levels without causing undue drug interactions.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Due to a lack of research, it is not known whether the effects on hormones are safe for pregnant women or those who breastfeed.

Depression

Following regular use of this compound, removing the effects from your system can have negative effects on mood, and may result in depressive symptoms. Slowly weaning off the regular use of this hormone is recommended.

Diabetes

There are some reports that the use of melatonin can increase the risk for diabetes patients, due to its effects on hormone levels and metabolism.

Vivid Dreams

Some users report unusually vivid dreams when using melatonin, which is relatively harmless, but still unexpected and potentially unpleasant.

Morning Grogginess

Melatonin can help people reach a deep and peaceful level of sleep, but this can be difficult to get over in the morning, resulting in grogginess, and a higher chance of hitting the snooze button.

Interactions

Possible drug interactions include:

Anticoagulants and anti-platelet drugs, herbs and supplements. These types of drugs, herbs and supplements reduce blood clotting. Combining use of melatonin with them might increase the risk of bleeding.

Anticonvulsants. Melatonin might inhibit the effects of anticonvulsants in neurologically disabled children.

Blood pressure drugs. Melatonin might worsen blood pressure in people taking blood pressure medications.

CNS depressants. Melatonin use with use of these medications might cause an additive sedative effect.

Diabetes medications. Melatonin might affect sugar levels. If you use diabetes medications, use melatonin cautiously.

Contraceptive drugs. Use of contraceptive drugs with melatonin might increase the effects and possible side effects of melatonin.

Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) and cytochrome P450 2C19 (CPY2C19) substrates. Use melatonin cautiously if you take drugs such as diazepam (Valium) and others that are affected by these enzymes.

Fluvoxamine (Luvox). This selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor can increase melatonin levels, causing unwanted excessive drowsiness.

Immunosuppressants. Melatonin can stimulate immune function and interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.

Seizure threshold lowering drugs. Taking melatonin with these drugs might increase the risk of seizures.

Valerian Root

Valeriana officinalis, commonly known as Valerian, is an herb native to Asia and Europe. It is now also grown in the US, China and other countries. Flowers from the valerian plant were used to make perfume centuries ago, and the root portion has been used in traditional medicine for at least 2,000 years.

Unlike its delicately scented flowers, valerian root has a very strong, earthy odor due to the volatile oils and other compounds responsible for its sedative effects.  Some people call valerian as a “heal all”, and the essential oil that is extracted from this miracle plant has dozens of different applications.

BENEFITS

reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep

increase time in deep sleep

Ease Anxiety

Relieve Insomnia

Side Effects

Valerian is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and is gentler than synthetic drugs, such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates.  Clinical research has reported safe use of valerian for medicinal purposes in over 12,000 people in studies lasting up to 28 days.

It can cause some side effects such as headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, excitability, uneasiness, heart disturbances, and even insomnia in some people. A few people feel sluggish in the morning after taking valerian, especially at higher doses. Some people experience dry mouth or vivid dreams. It’s best not to drive or operate dangerous machinery after taking valerian.
